A Year In my Life

A blog a day keeps the crazies away ( or does it attract them?)

Day 9 of 365- The one about Elvis

So yesterday would have been Elvis Presley's 75th birthday.  The legendary performer died in 1977.  But by  that time he had become a shell of his former self.

I understand that he was incredibly talented, but why do we still treat him so reverentally.  By the early 70's he was basically phoning it in, both on film and on in the studio.

Why do so many people have this theory that he is still alive.  I bet that if he had faked his own death that he would have passed by now, simply on the merrit of how he treated his body.

So lets celebrate the man's musical accomplishments for what they were, the beging of many great things in music.  But not as the ONLY great performer.

Day 8 of 365 - The one about Stockton

So today i spent the better part of my day in Stockton.  The point of my journey was to get my paycheck.  And I must say, what Forbes Magazine has said may just be true, that Stockton is the most miserable city in America.

Now I know, I work there, and if it weren't for the city's existence, I would most likely not have a job at the moment.  But in going down the streets, through downtown all you see is run-down, boarded up buildings, and most unfavorable parts of society staring you in the face.

I don't write this to make light of, or condemn the people of what was once a fine city, but to point out that the so-called economic recovery is not what it seems.  There will be no true recovery until the people with the least can work and contribute in the world.

Day 7 of 365

Getting set to watch the BCS National Championship game between #1 Alabama and #2 Texas.

ABC has a NICE looking overhead shot of the Rose Bowl right now, and with a little less than an hour to go until game time, the crowd is ready to go. But knowing how these "mega events" go they are going to be waiting quite a while for the kickoff.  The scheduled start time is 5:00 pm local time, but once they do all the pomp and circumstance with the bands, the coin toss and all that, I would say the kickoff is around 5:35.

That being said, I'm not going to make this an entire blog about sports again, although I could easily rename the blog and go that route.  This one is about me. HAHAHA!  Yeah that may seem self serving, but it's my blog and I can write what I want.

For those of you who may not "know" me,  I am a hefty individual who is working very hard to improve myself.  Back in September I renewed my promise to myself to get healthy and am very happy to say that since then, I have trimmed down to 276 lbs.

My new goal is to get down to a SUPERTRIMM 250 by my birthday.  A lofty goal to be sure, but what good is a goal if it is not just outside what you might be able to reach.  It's about the desire to do something that you don't think that you can do.  It's the question you ask your self "do i have what it takes to achieve what I think is unachievable?"

The difference between a goal and a dream is how bad you want it.

Day 6 of 365

Ah yes, can you feel it in the air?  As the briskness of winter guides us along from the excitement of Christmas and the promise of the new year, it is time to bask in the greatness that is the NFL Playoffs.  In just 3 short days the 2nd best post season offering of the year will be upon us.

Before I get to the matchups and my predictions, here is how I rank the 5 major post seasons in pro sports and why:

5. NASCAR Chase for the Cup.

NASCAR made the effort to make the last few weeks of the racing season interesting, for the most part.  The system of restarting the points with the top 12 drivers gives them something to race to win for.  BUT, if Jimmie Johnson wins it again, the quasi-sport will be off my list perminently.

4. NBA

Is there anything that is as anti-climatic that goes on for longer than the NBA playoffs? I mean come on!  The damn thing lasts for nearly 2 months, and its been rumored for years that the league tries to do what it can to ensure either the Lakers, Celtics, or whatever team Shaq is on makes it to the finals.  If they would simply shorten the openinig round to a best-of-5 series they would be making big improvements.

3. NHL

Ok, so the NHL uses the same basic structure as the NBA does for the playoffs, but there is just something about playoff hockey.  Maybe its the playoff beards.  Maybe its the INSANE crouds that pack the arenas and cheer wildly the entire game for thier team.  And don't look for me to be saying how much of an insult it is for "warm weather" teams to be in the playoffs (go Sharks)

2. NFL

The 4 division format has produced better wild card teams in the past several years, as each year since 2006 a team with a Wild Card game has made it to Super Sunday.  The two top teams from each conference earn an extra week off.  The biggest issue with the NFL playoffs is the week off between the Conferece championship and the Super Bowl.  All it is there to do is build hype, and the game usuall suffers for it.

1. MLB

This one is the one that needs such little change its crazy.  Some will say go to four divisions per league and eliminate the Wild Card. but the Wild Card race has been one of the most fericely competitive in all of baseball.  The 5 game opening round plays like a sprint.  The LCS and World Series have been like chess games at times.  I will have to admit though, the World Series has been losing my interest the past few seasons, not for lack of power teams, but its the fact that they have not been competitive.  The last 7 game series was in 2002, and well... im not going to talk about it.

As for the playoff matchups in the NFL here we go:

NFC

Green Bay @ Arizona

Green Bay takes this one.  Its time for Aaron Rodgers to step up and be the QB he is destined to be.

Philidelphia @ Dallas

As much as i HATE to say it, Dallas has the hot hand and I think they will take this one, which will provide a very interesting Divisional Round game one way or another

New Orleans and Minnesota have byes

AFC

New York Jets @ Cincinnati

I dont think that Mark Sanchez has the chops to be a big game NFL QB yet.  Ochocinco and his band of striped football players will take the turf at Paul Brown Stadium and put on the type of airel show that they are accustomed to.

Baltimore @ New England

The Ravens are hot right now, and the Patriots have been on the verge of self destruction for weeks now.  This game will mark the offical end to the New England dynasty in the AFC.  Sorry  Bostonians, it will be the end for both the Sox and the Pats this year.

Well folks, thats it for tonight, see you all later on....

Day 4 and 5 of 365

Well it happened. I missed a day on the blog.  At this moment I am going to blame it on the fact that my laptop lid continues to close on me.  Damn Dell and their crappy hinges.  Ever since i got this thing 2.5 years ago, the hinges have been loose as hell.

Anyway, yesterday began my quest for regular work again.  The worst job market that I have ever been a part of and here I am, hat in hand piratically begging to even get an interview.  You can see the frustration on the faces of the managers you talk to when you go into the businesses.  They are obviously sick of having people come in looking for work.  How long until the simple act of walking in to a place looking for work actually causes you to be disqualified from the process?

As for today, I am home in bed with what seems to be a sinus infection watching the news on channel 4.  Im sorry but they have lost all of my respect with their morning news, how can you take a NEWS station seriously when they have to rely on Skype to do their live spots.

Day 3 of 365

Not a very eventful day for me today, just a lazy Sunday.

Congrats to the 49ers for managing to go 8-8 this year.  Early on all signs pointed to a surprise run to the playoffs, but that slide midway through but those plans on ice.  Alex Smith is certianly looking like the real deal as far as a quarterback goes, especially with the new "Rae-Gun" offense they have been running.

As for the rest of the playoffs go, im gonna have to say that Brett Favre will be the one taking his team to MIami when all is said and done in the NFC.  On the AFC side, Im going to go with the Colts.  What classic Match up that would be- Favre vs Payton = FANTASTIC!!

On another slightly related football note, my website is back up, www.lionsradio.net, Melissa and myself are in the EARLY stages of preparing for next football season at Libety, log on to learn more about it.

Day 2 of 365

Well Jan. 2 is just about in the books, and I would have to say this is a good sign, I managed to keep my word about my blog so far. YAY FOR ME!!!

Anyway as I sit here at work listening to the Pacific Basketball pre-game show,  I start to think, when was the last time Radio was really relevant.

Remember, I work at a radio station.  But seriously when was the last time you or anyone you know said, "lets listen to the radio for a while."  Most music comes from iPods, and most people simply check the news or scores on the internet or their phones  with out the need or want to listen to the likes of Jon Miller, Tim Roye or Brent Musberger describe the event that they are broadcasting.

There is only one place to for the blame to go on this.  And no, its not the FCC for allowing de-regulation which opened the door for Clear Channel and Citadel (who just filed for Ch. 11 bankruptcy by the way).  Nor is it the fault of the new technology who give us CD quality audio on a device smaller than a key chain or information on demand at our finger tips.

No the blame is solely on you, or rather us, for allowing it to happen with out a fight.

Very soon I will tackle this in a podcast in greater detail.  Have a great night, and talk to you tomorrow.

Day 1 of 365

So it's a new year and i thought i would try a new venture- a blog a day for an entire year.  In all likelihood, I will go strong for maybe a month and then forget that I was even bothering, but damn it, it's good to try new things.

So why do this? Why take time out of my day to do something as trite as this on a myspace/facebook blog that most likely no one will read?  Well the answer is simple, I HAVE NO LIFE.  But trust me, when I do get a life you will be the 1st to know about it.

So here's how its gonna go, each day I'll post a new little blurb.  It might be written, it could be a podcast, but everyday I'm gonna post a new blog about that particular day of the year.

So how is 2010 shaping up so far---- well there are no complaints as of yet.  My weight loss efforts are going well for now. I'm beginning, 2010 at 276, looking to get to 250 by my birthday.  I will not be the least bit shameless about asking for support.

Well that's it for tonight, talk to y'all tomorrow.
